This route covers the southern section of the Beijing Central Axis, a newly inscribed UNESCO World Heritage site. It is designed to be a manageable 4-hour journey that blends imperial history, traditional commerce, and local lifestyle.

Route Overview

  • Start Point: Yongdingmen Park (South)
  • End Point: Qianmen Street / Dashilan Area
  • Total Distance: Approx. 2.5 km (walking pace)
  • Theme: "From the Gateway to the Imperial City"

The Itinerary

  1. Yongdingmen Park (0:00 - 0:45)
Start your journey at the southern tip of the Central Axis. Yongdingmen, meaning "Gate of Eternal Stability," was the outer gate of the old city. Although the current structure is a reconstruction, it stands as a majestic symbol of the city's layout.
  • Highlight: Take a photo with the gate tower against the blue sky. The park offers a peaceful atmosphere with traditional landscaping, setting the stage for the historical walk ahead.
  1. Tianqiao Area & The Folk Culture (0:45 - 1:30)
Walk north along the axis path. Historically, this area (Tianqiao) was the center of folk arts and entertainment for common people, contrasting with the imperial court.
  • Experience: While the old market vibe has changed, the area still retains the spirit of "commoner culture." You can visit the nearby Tianqiao Art Center or simply walk the path where emperors and commoners once crossed.
  1. Qianmen Street & Zhengyangmen (1:30 - 2:30)
Arrive at the majestic Zhengyangmen (Qianmen), the main gate to the Inner City. It is the only gate that retains both its gate tower and arrow tower.
  • Activity: Walk up Qianmen Street. This bustling pedestrian street is lined with "Time-honored Brands" (Laozihao). Look for the old tram tracks in the center of the street.
  • Must-See: The Quanjude Roast Duck Restaurant (origin store) and the Nei Lian Sheng shoe shop.
  1. Dashilan & Yangmeizhu Xiejie (2:30 - 3:30)
To the west of Qianmen lies Dashilan (pronounced "Da-shi-lan"), a labyrinth of alleys that has been a commercial hub for over 500 years.
  • Highlight: Explore the narrow lanes to find traditional tea shops, medicine halls (like Tongrentang), and silk stores.
  • Hidden Gem: Walk further west to Yangmeizhu Xiejie, a renovated hutong area that mixes old Beijing residences with trendy coffee shops and art galleries. It represents the perfect blend of old and new Beijing.
  1. Conclusion at the Axis Museum (3:30 - 4:00)
End your tour by visiting the Beijing Central Axis Museum (located near the Drum Tower, or you can visit the exhibition center near Qianmen if time is tight). Alternatively, enjoy a Peking Duck dinner in the Dashilan area to celebrate your completion of the "Dragon's Spine" walk.
