The Forbidden City is in the centre of Beijing. Public transport is highly recommended, because there is heavy traffic and few parking spaces nearby. You can enter the palace only through Meridian Gate (Wumen, the south gate).
1. By Subway (Most Recommended, Fastest)
Subway is the best choice for foreign tourists.
Line 1
Get off at Tiananmen East Station, take Exit B. Walk about 5 minutes north to pass Tiananmen security check, then reach the Meridian Gate.
You can also get off at Tiananmen West Station, walk about 8 minutes to the entrance.
Line 8
Get off at Jinyu Hutong Station, take Exit C. Walk along Donghua Street to the East Gate, then walk along the moat to the main entrance. This route has fewer crowds.
2. By Bus
Many bus routes stop near Tiananmen Square:Bus No. 1, 2, 52, 82, 120 and sightseeing buses.Get off at Tiananmen East or Tiananmen West stop. Then walk a few minutes through security check to the Meridian Gate.
3. By Taxi / Didi (China’s taxi app)
Tell the driver your destination: Meridian Gate, the Forbidden City (Palace Museum).
Due to traffic control around Tiananmen, taxis cannot drive right to the gate. You will be dropped off nearby, then walk 5–10 minutes to the entrance after security check.
Important Tips
You must pass Tiananmen security check before entering the Forbidden City.
The Forbidden City only has one entrance (Meridian Gate) and two exits (Shenwu Gate and Donghua Gate).
No private cars can park near the palace. Driving by yourself is not suggested at all.
