Tanzhe Temple was built in the Jin Dynasty and went through the Tang, Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties. The Qing Dynasty was the most glorious period in the history of Tanzhe Temple. Emperor Kangxi bestowed the name "Xiuyun Temple".
Tanzhe Temple is the oldest temple in the Beijing area, and there's a saying that "Tanzhe Temple existed before the city of Yanjing (Beijing) was built." The temple is vast in scale, with its architecture preserving the style of the Ming and Qing dynasties, making it the largest ancient temple complex in the suburbs of Beijing. The halls are built along the contours of the mountain, creating a harmonious and picturesque scene. The entire temple faces south, backed by Baozhu Peak, and surrounded by nine other peaks including Huilong, Huju, Pengri, and Zicui, making it a place of auspicious feng shui. It is named Tanzhe Temple because of the Dragon Pool behind it and the mulberry trees in front. The famous Ten Scenic Spots of Tanzhe include Red Leaves on the Plain, Nine Dragons Playing with a Pearl, Thousand Peaks Arching Greenery, and Ten Thousand Valleys Piled with Clouds. Nearby are the Tanzhe Temple Pagoda Forest and several farmhouses full of folk customs.
A must-see attraction at Tanzhe Temple is the "Emperor Tree," which is over 30 meters tall and more than a thousand years old. It is one of the iconic landscapes of Tanzhe Temple.
The Magnolia × soulangeana at Tanzhe Temple was planted during the Ming Dynasty, more than 400 years ago. It was also a gift from the imperial court, making it extremely precious. The magnolias in the temple are bicolor, with purple and white flowers. While white, purple, and yellow magnolias are more common in Beijing, this type of Magnolia × soulangeana with its purple and white flowers is extremely rare. Such an ancient Magnolia × soulangeana can probably only be seen at Tanzhe Temple in all of Beijing, making it a true marvel of the capital.
